A Week of Learning: Sensory Experiences- Chocolate playdough for rolling, pinching, pressing cookie cutters and designing Valentine chocolates. My, it smelled good but not edible. Melting crayons to make hearts- picked out color combinations, predicted what melting would do, peeled and broke crayons, expressed amazement when crayon hearts were popped out of the mold. Why are sensory activities important for preschoolers? It encourages learning through exploration, problem solving, and creativity. Sensory activities help to build nerve connections in the brain and foster the development of language and motor skills. All while having a great time!

RECIPE FOR CHOCOLATE PLAYDOUGH:

1 ½ CUPS FLOUR

2 TBSP VEGETABLE OIL

1 CUP SALT

½ CUP COCOA POWDER

2 CUPS WATER

2 TBSP CREAM OF TARTAR

Add all ingredients to a medium-large saucepan.  Over medium-high heat stir consistently until it forms a soft ball in the middle of pan.  Takes about 5 min.  Using spatula scop out the play dough on wax paper and allow to cool a few minutes.  Knead until texture is smooth and glossy.  ENJOY!  (This recipe could be cut in half if making play dough for 2 or 3 children.)
